52 Weekends in the Poconos

True Love Never Dies - Lewis Cemetary Bear Creek Village (Luzerne County)

In light of 12-12-12  and everyone getting married that day for good luck it reminded me that all  marriages start with a vow: to be together forever. Everyone says it…blah blah blah. A very rare few know what it really means. To show it. That, my friends, is the difference. In Bear Creek Village there is a most exceptional cemetery that not just speaks from the heart, it speaks right into your own. Honestly, I could the feel sweet emotion from my first step into the Lewis family’s final resting...

Cemetary of Lost Souls - Hickory Run, PA (Carbon County)

Another local ghost story centers around a little-known graveyard in Hickory Run State Park, on a small hill across from the main office on Route 534. It’s said that the ghost of a little girl named Lizzie Gould is sometimes seen walking the road or heard playing amongst the graves. Of course I wondered—could it be true?A friend and I decided to find out, but we didn’t find much. The cemetery is unmarked, but you can see low steps of sunken stone sinking their way up the hill if you look close....

Living in the mountains for years, you’re bound to hear some ghost stories. Maybe tall tales, maybe not. This October I decided to finally follow some up while at the same time trying not to…scare anything up.

So we started with the closest and more forbidding story about an abandoned graveyard on North Church Rd. in Weatherly. Rumor has it that during a full moon, you’re in big trouble there. I have no desire to tempt the terrible, so I went during the day to locate the spooky spots as quickly...

The Pocono Mountains are packed with tons of fall foliage, Halloween and other harvest time events to revel in. Last weekend a friend and I escaped with my grandsons, taking a long but gorgeous ride to Country Junction’s Great Pocono Pumpkin Festival, which started Sept. 29th and runs Saturdays and Sundays through October 28th from 11 to 6.

We got there right after it opened Sunday morning, and there was already a nice crowd. But not crowded! The festival is set up to the left of the store a...

Some nights are special because of who you’re with, or what you do. Some nights, it’s because of where you are. Penns Peak is one of those places. This vista-filled venue packs in an eclectic mix of national and regional talent including live bands, comedy acts and other enticing entertainment…with room for 1,800 partygoers, no less! That doesn’t mean that every night is a concert, and sad as it is, I haven’t been to one of their bigggies yet. But actually, you don’t need one! You can see the lin...

Whether you’ve ever been to a drive-in movie theatre, think you heard of them, saw one on Happy Days, or don’t have a clue what I’m talking about… it’s time to go, people!A drive-in movie theatre is like a trip back to the 50’s, or okay, maybe the 70’s, 80’s... Who knows when your neighborhood got rid of these hot spots, but ours are still happening. I haven’t been to one in ages, so it was well past time to rediscover this childhood treat. My first visit was to the Garden Drive-In off of Route 1...
